June 09, 2008
Recognition is attracting the world's top corporations
By Jennifer Juergens
Encouraging Excellence was the theme of the 11th Annual Recognition Professionals International Conference that took place from April 27th to April 30th in Newport Beach, Calif. Speakers included Bill Buckner and Karen Sachs from Cargill Inc. They shared ideas as well as "tragic moments" on creating a culture of recognition in a complex organization. Bill Catlette, author of Contented Cows Moove Faster, spoke on the keys to winning through people (see our interview with Catlette). Bob Nelson spoke on recognition technologies and the best ways in which managers can motivate.
"The feedback we got from the conference included 'This is the best conference ever,' which we were really proud of," says Christi L. Gibson, CRP, executive director of RPI. "Our Going Green effort was well received and attendees thought our breakout sessions were extremely informative."
Kevin Cronin of Bank of America spoke on "Aligning Recognition Programs with Corporate Goals and Culture," and Mary Kennett of Amgen, along with Derek Irvine of Globoforce, talked about how Amgen, a Fortune 500 pharmaceutical company, got 15,000 employees worldwide involved in their recognition program. Microsoft's Michael Norried spoke on cross-organizational collaboration, budgeting and localization.
Recognition Professionals International, formerly NAER, is an international nonprofit association of employers existing to study, develop and promote systems that enhance employee engagement and performance through employee recognition. Its membership is composed mostly of corporate recognition managers.
The 12th Annual RPI Conference will be held at the Naples Grand Resort & Club in Naples, Fla., May 3-6, 2009. Certified Recognition Professional courses will be offered May 1, 2 and 6. The fall summit will be held in Chicago at McCormick Place Sept. 23-25 in conjunction with The Motivation Show. Please visit www.recognition.org for more information.
