Rymax Adds Battery-Assisted Bikes

Rymax Signs Exclusive Deal to Carry Electric eZeebikes
By Donna M. Airoldi

Electric bicycles—popular elsewhere around the world for their environmental and cost-saving benefits over gas-fueled vehicles—are beginning to make inroads in the United States, and are now available for inclusion in incentive programs.

Last month Rymax, the Pine Brook, NJ, merchandise provider, announced an exclusive partnership with eZeebike USA. “With the price of gas being a continuous point of concern and the current economic and political conditions reinforcing a push towards energy-efficiency, we are very excited to add eZee bike to our exclusive brand offerings,” says Paula Ambrozic, director of strategic relations and compliance at Rymax. “eZee bike understands the needs of consumers and is an excellent option for this growing market.”

Even though only about 200,000 were sold here in 2009 (compared to about 120 million on the roads in China, which has actively supported the technology since 1991), interest is growing for the eco-friendly bikes that are also a fun way to get around, especially for casual bikers who appreciate their health and ecological benefits but may have difficulty conquering steep hills or long distances.

The eZeebike line includes beach cruisers, performance bikes, tricycles, and a compact foldable model that can easily fit in the trunk of a car. Battery charges last four to five hours, with bike speeds reaching up to 20 miles per hour. Riders can pedal the bicycle, use the electric motor while not pedaling, or use the electric motor as an assist while pedaling.

The two models currently available through Rymax are the Quando and Sprint.

The eZee Quando reaches a maximum speed of 16 mph, weights just 48 pounds and can fold up in about 15 seconds for easy storage. Unfolded, the aluminum alloy frame is 36 inches long, 17 inches wide and 30 inches high, with 20-inch wheels. The 37V 10 Ah lithium polymer battery takes a maximum of 5.5 hours to charge for a range of 20 to 25 miles. Quando MSRP is $1,995.

The Sprint, at a slightly heavier 57 pounds, has been designed primarily for daily commuting focusing on comfort and pleasure, and reaches a maximum speed of 20 mph. The high torque motor powers the front while the rear internal gears change speedily and silently ensuring a smooth ride. Spring MSRP is $2,195.
