Speaker's Corner: On Air With ESPN's Mike Greenberg April 23, 2008
By Robert Tuchman
Sports fans who tune in to ESPN's radio station are no stranger to Mike Greenberg, co-host of Mike & Mike in the Morning, ESPN Radio's daily drivetime show (M-F 6-10 a.m. ET). The witty celeb is also frequently an anchor for the 6 p.m. SportsCenter, ESPN's flagship news and information program.
Sports fans may also be familiar with Mike's progressing career. Prior to joining ESPN, Greenberg worked as a sports anchor/reporter for the regional cable news network CLTV in Chicago, Ill., since April 1995. While there, he covered all local sports teams for the 24-hour cable news network, anchored sportscasts and hosted SportsPage, a one-hour Sunday night program featuring live guests and viewer calls. Additionally, Greenberg previously worked for Chicago's WSCR-Radio (1992-96) serving as a reporter—covering events including the World Series, Super Bowl, etc.—and talk show host. Quite the homerun resume.
But what you might not know is that this sports personality also spends his time giving motivational presentations to corporate groups and other audiences. Here Incentive online columnist Robert Tuchman, president of celebrity marketing firm TSE Sports & Entertainment, gets some one-on one-time with Mike.
What is your typical speaking topic nowadays? I speak half on the topic of sports and the other half about my book, "My Wife Thinks I'm An Idiot."
Do you do joint events with your broadcast partner, Mike Golic? Yes, we do a lot of events together, but I also do many solo.
With your schedule and show, what are the most convenient times to do events? Being that we do our show early every weekday morning, weekends are normally best for me and summer time is especially good.
What do you enjoy most about giving speeches? I love the one on one interaction with the audience. It's always fun to do a live Q&A with people.
Do you enjoy the interaction with clients, signing autographs and taking pictures? Yes. It's always fun to meet the people and hear their stories.
How many private appearances and or speeches will you do a year? I normally do between 10 and 12.
Are your speeches more motivational, spiritual or comical? I try to be funny and entertaining.
How do you come up with your speech topics? I simply tell stories from my career and many from my book.
What motivates you to do speaking engagements? It's always nice to hear people laugh at my jokes.
Do you prefer speaking to certain types of groups or industries? I enjoy speaking to corporate groups a lot, and I’m also comfortable speaking to charities.
Whose one of your favorite speakers? Robert Wuhl was very funny. Bob Costas and Billy Crystal are both terrific.
